A facade has to be flat, and it has to stand up to Dutch weather. I render exterior walls and facades white or in the colour you want, from scaffold right through to handover. I prefer to work in dry weather, because a render coat needs to cure properly before the rain gets to it.

Plastering and painting in one job

After the plastering comes the paint, and I do that too. As a painter in Gorinchem I paint walls, ceilings and window frames indoors, clean lines along doors and skirting boards. Outside I paint frames and facades, with the right preparation on wood or masonry, since sun and rain wear a paint layer down faster out there. If the surface has just been plastered, I wait until it’s dry before the first coat goes on.

WhatsApp works the same way in English as it does in Dutch: send me a photo of the wall, ceiling or facade, tell me roughly what needs doing, and I’ll reply in English. Photos do most of the explaining anyway, since they show me the surface and the size of the job before we’ve even talked.

For a bigger job, a whole room or a facade, I still come and look in person before I give a price, exactly as I would for any other customer. A small repair or a full renovation, working in English changes nothing about how the job itself gets done.

Getting a quote: photo to price

You don’t need to fill out a three-page form to get a quote from me. Here’s how it works:

1. You send a photo of the wall, ceiling or facade, roughly how many square metres it is, and which town you’re in.
2. I send you a price. On a big or complicated job, I come and look first before naming a price.
3. We agree a date, and on that day I’m at your door.
4. I cover the floor and furniture before I start, and outside I tape off tiles or a terrace where that’s needed.
5. When I’m done, I tidy up and sweep the place clean, so you’re not left cleaning up after me.

Your house stays liveable while I’m working, even if the job runs a few days.

Why smooth plastering matters

A tiler can’t carry on over a wall that isn’t flat, and a painter sees every bump the moment the first coat goes on. If I don’t plaster it smooth enough, you only find out once the next tradesman is already on site, and by then it costs extra work to put right. That’s why I’d rather do the plastering and the painting myself: it means I know the surface is right before the paint goes on.

On a rush job in Goirle, the tiler wouldn’t have been able to carry on without smooth plastering on the bathroom partition wall, one customer wrote. In Gorinchem I plastered a 68 square metre ceiling, and that customer said I work precisely and cleanly. And on a house in Goirle it was a sloped wall, 4.2 metres high and 11 metres long, finished smooth right down to the details, in that customer’s own words.
